OUTBOARD Type and Fittings

Hi There having sorted out the Gearbox problems, New Gearchange. I was wondering if a Outboard Motor Mount could be fitted to the Back of the Nauticus and what type also what Motor size would be suitable as a secondary unit ?????

Hi there fireman, we have seen a nauti 22 fitted with an outboard and that was a 15hp honda. So I would imagine that it is possible to fit one on a 27ft. as for engine size it would depend on whether you are on a canal or river as boats on canals don't seem to need as much power, something to do with currents I belive.

Hi Fireman,

Fixing an outboard bracket is a straightforward job - no rocket science involved and certainly there is enough room for a bracket on a Nauticus 27. If you planned on keeping the inboard and using the outboard only in emergencies you would of course have to steer the outboard by hand. If it was a replacement then a GRP moulding is available that could be fitted into the transom. Which do you want to do?

As Lyndel point out the size of outboard does depend upon the use you intend for your boat. As little as a 6hp would drive you on canals but I think that you would need 15-20hp for tidal work (Trent, Ribble, etc.). The Ribble Estuary has tidal flows as high as 5mph which with the need to cover 8.6 miles in one and half hours max means an average speed of 5.6 mph - the Trent flows at up to 7mph!!! You have up 50 miles to cover (obviously you would have to moor along the way) and would need to be capable of making some 11-12mph to counter the tidal flow. All canals have a speed limit of 4mph and 6hp should just about manage this.

Hi Soapy many thanks for that, do you have info where the moulding could be acquired ?? and IZI ELL will only be used on the Canal network Many Thanks also wanting info on Folding Windscreen but have tried Mick but to no avail

My apologies Fireman, I knew I had seen a seperate moulding that could be fitted to any standard transom and would take an outboard but, search as I might I cannot find a standard unit available in the UK. We are going to the boat for the weekend so I am going to have a close look to see how it could be done, diy style - I'm almost certain it can done, but need to check construction and dimensions.

Hi Fireman,

Well I had a good close look at my Nauticus over the weekend and I must say it would be a major task to make the conversion to outboard with a well so it could sit on the actual transom. All in all it would certainly be easier to fit an outboard bracket such as the one shown here http://www.marinescene.co.uk/product/446/aluminium-outboard-bracket- (copy and paste, or click) and just ditch the existing engine and leg then blank off the hole through which it fitted.

The work involved to make a fitted transom conversion would be extensive:
1 out of the water,
2 remove engine and leg,
3 reinforce all round proposed cut, not forgetting the transom deck, sides to outboard well and transom itself where o/b will hang, fibreglassing the whole lot in. This is actually the most important part of the project as the rear deck and the deck well behind the rear seat is key to holding the width of the boat, at deck level, stable - and, you would be removing it! You would have to provide a new bulkhead capable of holding the sides in the correct place, and allow access to the engine from above.
4 cut away unwanted part of transom and rear deck,
5 make good transom at fixing point with solid cross beam capable of carrying the o/b,
6 provide new wiring to instruments and batteries, etc.,
7 steering control connections, fuel supply connections,
8 new stern navigation light,
9 fitting the new o/b and, of course,
10 re-launching!

If I'm managing to convey just how much of a job it is - then good! Because it's a biggun! I'd say, stick to a transom bracket and gain some locker space where the old engine comes out. Admittedly you might get charged an extra 2 feet mooring fee.

Having read that, can't see me changing to an O/B anytime soon, unless it's on a bracket of course.

Oh, and by the way, I've changed my mind about the power of outboard - I would go for at least 9 or 10hp and would prefer about 15 just to be safe. Over the weekend we found ourselves struggling against fairly windy conditions (20kph) with a crosswind blowing us sideways. This meant going along crabwise, and other times being almost stopped by a headwind when progress was only made by increasing revs substantially. I just didn't realise how much it would effect the boat - too used to a keel or a deep vee hull. My previous two boats were a 26' sailer (huge lump of lead hanging down below) and a 21' sports cruiser (50kph) with almost 90 degrees at the keel - neither of which went sideways much!!!

I hope you didn't rush out and buy a 6hp, Fireman!
