Hi everyone,

- we posted this in the wrong place first time - duh!

We are Rita and David and are now the new owners of 'The Mara' soon to be renamed 'Our Eden'. We believe our boat to be build number 247 - but, are a not totally certain as this was a scribbled note found on paperwork left on board by the previous owner. (Now confirmed as we found the builders plate)

Based at Moons Bridge Marina on the Lancaster Canal where we are accompanied by a number of other Nauticus 27s. We are new to inland waterways, except for two different one week holidays on hire boats. It has taken a while to make this momentous move having dithered over what kind of boat we wanted and having come up with arguments for just about every different type for the last 3 years.

This coming weekend will be our first foray, or 'canal-trial', as a shake-down cruise, and looking forward to many happy days afloat. If you spot us along the way - hail us, and join us for a tot or two. You'll be most welcome.

Rita and David Hudson

P.S.
We had a successful and eventful weekend followed a week later by a four-day trip both of which, although with some 'teething' problems, were enjoyable. I need to practice getting off a lee shore!!!!

Hi my name is Ray, my partner Caroline and I are fairly new to river cruising and have much to learn about looking after and maintaining our own cruiser, but this is something we are both looking forward to. We have a diesel powered Nauticus called Sapphire which we bought from Farndon marina near Newark back in May and have her moored over at Oundle marina near Peterborough.
I would be really keen on finding out if there are manuals available for my Ford Diesel if anyone can help.
Thanks and happy cruising,.... if it ever stops raining!!

Hi there Ray & Caroline, welcome to the world of the Nauticus owner.
You don't say which type of ford engine you have got in Sapphire but as most of them are car/van engines that have been marinised you should be able to get a haynes type manual to help with the basic servicing and repairs untill you find a proper one.
We noticed that you are moored at Oundle. We are mooored just down the river at Elton Boat club, just before Warmington lock, so if you are out and about this weekend pop in and have a cuppa.
Cheers Derek & Lyn (lyndel)

Hi Derek & Lyn

I have not taken too much notice of the engine just yet, I check the oil and water, look for any leaks and that's about it, basically we want to just get out and enjoy what time we have when the weather is nice. We have arranged to have her out over the winter in order to give her a good going over both inside and out.
We also like our mooring at Oundle and i'm sure we will call in at Elton sometime.

Ray & Caroline.

Helloooo.

The name's Steve. My father (Ron) has just taken ownership of Myth, a nauticus 27 moored at Sawley in Notts. My dad is not particularly an internet savvy person, so I am in attendance on his behalf so, greetings to one and all.

We will be needing to install a new power circuit at some point in the not so distant future, so I have a feeling that this forum and website will become invaluable. It's great to see other nauticus owners here, and as my father and myself have only casual experience with boating, I have a feeling that I'll be asking quite a few questions over the x-amount of years that we'll be spending happily chugging around the Trent.

Salut!

P.S This whole petrol/no gas fridge thing has me pricking my ears up immediately. I'm not 100% sure yet, as I havent been to see the thing with my own eyes, but I think Myth maybe petrol driven, and it DEFINITELY has a gas fridge onboard. Should I be soiling myself right about now? Or should I find out whether it is indeed petrol or diesel driven first before proceeding to soil my pants?

Hi Steve (or should I say poopy pants !!)

If your dad has just purchased Myth is there not a current boat safety certificate only that would state that everything complies with the current regulations.

My partner and I recently bought our Nauticus "Sapphire" from Farndon marina not far from you, she had a current boat safety certificate and lucky for us the survey was still valid also.

Also not sure if this helps, but Sapphire has a ford diesel engine, but I was quite quick to notice that the gas pipe on our fridge was only connected to the fridge itself and it had been disconnected and capped off at the bottles.

The only problem we have encountered and put right so far after close inspection has been with the water heater, the flue for it only went as far as the roof as the hole wasn't made large enough for it to go through so there was a high risk of fumes escaping into the cabin and a slight risk of fire, the cowl on the outside was not wide enough either and could be closed which is also a big no no as it must be fixed open at all times.

Hope this might help

Hi Ray! (I'm pleased to report that the integrity of my pants is still A1, but you cant be too careful!!)

One of the first things my dad had to sort out after purchasing the boat was renewing the safety certificate. There were one or two minor things that needed doing, fire extinguisers replacing, and a few other minor points, but these were no problem and the boat passed its certificate at the second time of asking. It's just that the thought of a gas powered fridge in the same vicinity of something that makes sparks makes me nervous, so I had to ask, but I guess it wouldnt have passed if it was a problem.

There was a problem with the engine having air bubbles in it, or something to that effect. Those have been bled out now but I do know the battery was run down trying to get the engine started before it was diagnosed with the air bubble problem. Thats all sorted now apparently.

To be fair, I havent actually yet been to see the boat with my own eyes, so everything I say until that point is just going to be conjecture.

Interesting point about the flue for the water heater. I'll be looking at ours as a point of priority when I get up there, I'll also be looking at the fridge carefully, just to satisfy my own nervousness about it.

I will be hopefully getting out to the boat this weekend, or failing that, early next week. I'm really looking forward to it. We are moored right next to another Nauticus 27 apparently, so it seems that we are in good company.

Hope to see you out there at some point, Ray, definitely stay in touch, and I'll let you know on the forum what my first impressions of Myth are when I've seen her.

Cheers!

P.S Could anyone just explain to me quickly how the gear lever operates? It's just that when my dad first bought the boat, he kept unwittingly trying to start it up in gear because nobody had explained to him how the gearing should be operated - I think this is what caused the air bubble problem. I would like to avoid any problems in the future that could be caused by any naievety.

Hi Steve

I have actually been to Sawley marina for Sunday lunch with friends who live in the Long Eaton area, I was very impressed not only with lunch (I live to eat), but with the marina itself.

I am not familier with bubbles in the engine as I have only had Sapphire since April, but she does go ok. The throttle on her has a neutral position, if you move it up it goes into slow forwrd gear or if you go down it goes into slow reverse, then adjust the throttle acordingly. We also have a button on the throttle housing that you can push down and hold to disable the propeller in order to rev the engine, this is ideal for me when starting up the old diesel as she can sometimes smoke a little.

Welcome to all you new members who have joined in my absence, i still own and have been using nautianne (27 nauti) , since last year she has done the 4counties and been to llangollen, also down to stratford and down the oxford, aside from all the weekend cruises round willington, sawley, beeston etc.
Anyway i am back now for a time as i need to modify my drive as there is slight play in the gear selectors (transa drive), so i am attempting to do it this week with the boat in the water, anyone got any magnetic gloves i can borrow!
Seriously , if anyone has the same drive and has problems with slipping gears, normally starts when selectig reverse i am happy to pass on details of the modification as according to a friend of mine who has done countless ones over the years is a cure to the most common fault.
cheers

Rick
