NEW FACE ALERT. I'm John HB and my first (and only) Mate is Audrey. Charlotte (12 yrs) will be the Cabin girl and Paddy the dog will a smelly nuisance as always.

I now know how to remember which is port and starboard thanks to this site. I am "Dolphin" which is a 27ft moored at White Bear Marina at Adlington in Lancs, on the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Today, I have just finished installing an exhaust pipe on the back of the engine after removing the old, corroded one a week ago. Actually, it was my friend who was a marine engineer in a previous lif e who did the deed; but I did assist.

I'm just replacing the Palomo water heater as well. I did research this and there does seem a lot of confusion over this petrol / gas safety issue. I've gone with the straight replacement on the basis that it passed it's certificate last year with the Palomo in placeo. Oh Yeso. I did look at several options and this seemed to be the best for me. I'll let you know if I get any problems.

Cushions are ordered. I've settles myself witht he thought that it is cheaper than a 3 piece suite. Ho hum.

Welcome JHB, as I understand it, the gas heater problem is that it should be balanced flue, and I dont think it is. It is a Carbon Monoxide/Ventilation fear that drives the "Rule".

Now I believe, that you can not "install" a new Paloma type Heater, but you can "Repair" an existing one.

Which of course you have done, including the "Repair" of exterior casing

Concerning the paloma and ruling regarding their use, .... currently they are allowed as there isnt a room sealed instantaneous water heater to replace them.........
on the point of safety where the nauticus is concerned if you have a petrol engine, the use of a paloma or a gas fridge is a no no as both have a pilot light that could easily ignite any petrol fumes causing an explosion.
hope this clarifies the situation

cheers

Does that mean that if you have one you have to take it out?

I chose a Diesel because I did not want possible petrol witch hunts.

However when I was deciding It would appear that "Experts" on Canals, see Petrol as the Spawn of Satan and those on Rivers being more laid back, saying all is easily rectified.

They all read the same "rules" as well !

I am sure that there are Certified Petrol Engine Boats with Gas Fridges etc, The normal problem is getting gas replacements as The market is moving to an oil based fuel

To clarify, if you have a paloma fitted then they are ignored as there is no viable room sealed replacement available at an affordable cost.
With regard to gas fridges , although some previously tested petrol engined boats will have them, on the current test they would not be allowed in a cabin as it puts a naked flame i.e. the pilot low down where they could cause an explosion in the event of a leakage of fuel vapour.
some people have got away with installing them in the thingypit area and running them on 12volt during the test and although a lot of examiners will accept this , if you have ever seen the result of such an explosion i am sure you would think twice!
there were 2 guys seriously injured on a narrowboat a few years ago on the T+M when one filled a petrol genny on the deck of his boat whilst in a lock and the fumes were ignited by the pilot light on his fridge
Using a 2nd battery and an alternator controller like a sterling or kestral you can easily gain the power to run a fridge on 12volts , especially if you switch it off at night as i do.
To sum up in my opinion aside from b.s.s. rulings i prefer this system to alleviate any chance of explosion or fire due to gas or petrol vapour leaks.

cheers

Sorry all I am so rude not introducing myself. Bought Tigger 11 in November and have had little opportunity to do too much to her. I am based at Oundle Marina near Peterborough on the Nene. Will try and get round to putting a hoto on as soon as. Interesting reading your site as some problems seem common as my engine also leaks through a core plug to rear of engine behind flywheel. Anyone know a good but cheap mechanic who can solve this problem for me. Also found that the timber strakers(hope that is the right term) should have rubbers fitted any info on this would be welcome. Was looking forward to a trip down the river soon but have ahd to out on hold till repairs carried out. Oh the joys of boating! ???

Hi! My name is Harry. Been my dream to own a boat for ten years. Found this beautiful classic cruiser May this year. She is called "Sundowner", same as my username!! Had a few problems but soon sorted them. First the remote gear cable kept slipping out of the rubber sheath; so changed it for a metal elbow type - works perfect. Next the starter motor packed up. Changed it for a new one - works perfect. Then the fuel pump packed up. Got a new one - guess what - works perfect. Had it out for a run last Wednesday, 10 June 2009 and it was a dream come true. Looking forward to many more trips. Bye the way, if anybody is out on the K&A western end then intro yourself; be pleased to meet you and exchange histories. Bye for now.

Hi All
Just out of interest "Sundowner" has a 1300cc Ford Escort cross-flow petrol engine with Z-drive gear-box

Hi Sundowner, Hope you enjoy your Nauticus for a few years to come.

They are a very pretty boat and although not all owners are into computing and forums, they always are proud to see other Nautici!

One day we will have to see if we could do a rally, as we are flung so wide it might have to be by road transport
